My chosen movie

1) What film have you chosen? I have chosen the film frozen.

2) Why did you choose this film in particular? I chose this film in particular because it conveys a very interesting representation of women. Usually the male character is shown to be the dominant character, in this case, Elsa is the dominant character and the male friend is the love interest. It completely switches the stereotypical fact that women are considered weaker than men. The movie switches gender roles which makes it more interesting to watch.

Institutional background

1) What was the film studio or production company behind your chosen film? E.g. Warner Brothers, Paramount etc. The production company for frozen was Walt Disney Pictures and Walt Disney Animation Studios.

2) Who was the distributor for the theatrical release of the film in the UK? Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

No brand loyalty

1) What genre does your chosen film fit into? The genre of frozen fits into animation, adventure, Disney, Fantasy, comedy and musical.

2) How can you tell it fits that genre? Be specific with reference to the trailer. I can tell this movie fits in with the genre because film is not real it is obvious that its is an animation. Also the movie contains many scenes where the characters are experiencing problems and going on adventures. Furthermore, the colours of the trailer are fun and bright, this is perfect for kids. the characters are not real they are also made up.

3) Does your chosen film have any stars or a director that are known for that particular genre? The directors of frozen are Jennifer lee whose is known fro the writing of Wreck it Ralph, story contributions to Zootopia. Also the additional director of frozen also co-directed Tarzan,Surf's up and Pocahontas

Its all matter of timing

1) What was the UK release date for your chosen film? The UK release date for Frozen was December 6th 2013.

2) When did the first trailer appear on YouTube for your movie? Find the earliest example you can and embed it in your blog.  https://youtu.be/TbQm5doF_Uc . September 26th 2013

3) What other examples of marketing (teaser trailers, main trailers, newspaper or TV interviews etc.) can you find for your chosen film from before the film’s release date?   https://youtu.be/TbQm5doF_Uc
https://youtu.be/-WdC4DaYIeQ
Its a social thing

1) What was the word-of-mouth like for your chosen film? If you can’t find tweets (probably blocked) use the IMDB user review rating or the Rottten Tomatoes Tomatometer rating to judge whether the public have given the movie a good review. As a whole, the Frozen movie gained many good reviews by the public and became the number 1 movie for children. As the movie became more popular toys and games were made from the film, this shows you how much of a success the film was and that it was really enjoyable to young viewers as well as older viewers. the film was such a triumph that the production company/studio made a sequel called Frozen Fever.

2) Find three quotes (no more than 25 words each) from user reviews of your movie to create a picture of what the public reaction to the film has been. Post them on your blog.

For the first time in forever a true Disney classic is realized.

Risky business

1) What was the original budget for your chosen film? The original budget for the frozen movie was £150 million.

2) How much money did the film make in the opening weekend? Frozen made £243,390  million on their opening evening.

3) How much money has the film made in total? (Look for the subheading ‘Gross’ which has the total box-office earnings listed). Disney's 2013 hit frozen has grossed £30,807,697 billion at the box office.

4) For a film to be considered a box office success, it needs to make at least two-and-a-half times the budget in box office takings. Using this method, was the film you have chosen a success? (Or, if it's a recent release, do you expect it to be a box office success?) The film frozen was a success as it made more money in the box office. Frozen has earned $1.2 billion worldwide, becoming the fifth highest-grossing film of all time and highest-grossing animation. The film has gained 2 Academy awards, a Bafta and a Golden globe.

Stars in their eyes

1) What films has the director previously directed? Are they in the same or similar genres? The other films the directors have directed were Frozen fever.

2) Who is the main star in the film? The main star of frozen is Idina Menzel.

3) What other films has the main star appeared in? Are any of the films similar to the one you are researching? The other films Idina Menzel appeared in are Enchanted and Rent.

4) Are the stars or the director or writer mentioned in the trailer for the film? No, only the studio is mentioned in the movie trailer [Disney].

feedback

WWW: Two good posts – but you’re also missing a fair amount of work. The opening questions are solid and the media language analysis of the Monsters vs Aliens poster is very good. However, there’s more missing work than posted.

EBI: You clearly need to ensure all missing work is on your Media blog urgently. It’s common to have blog issues in the first couple of weeks (perhaps your work is in drafts and needs to be published?) but if you don’t complete work in Media you will fail the course – it is as simple as that. The work you need to post: Fruit bowl; Camerawork photo storyboard pictures and analysis; Minority Report shot-by-shot analysis. In terms of feedback of your film poster analysis, it starts well but then you lose detail. Institution looks cut-and-pasted – you need to avoid this at all costs. For audience and representation there are so many interesting things you could say about gender but you just don’t go into enough detail.

LR: Post the missing pieces of work and send me an email when they’re up on your blog. Then, reflect on your first month of Media. What do you feel is your strongest piece of work so far? What is your weakest? What specific skills or knowledge do you need to develop over the rest of the course?

Story board
camera shots/angles

shot 1: wide shot [ws] angle: low angle

looking at this picture you can tell this is a wide shot with a low angle because the picture was captured to established the setting, and taken at a low angle to make the person look big and powerful.

shot 2: over the shoulder shot [ots], wide shot/establishing shot

For this photo, we have chosen an over the shoulder shot which is usually used to represent conversations or to show a characters point of view. the unusual perspectives make the audience question whether danger is close in this case a friend is simply walking towards them.

shot 3:close up [cu]

This close up of the 2 hands meeting shows that some sort of deal is happening. the background of this close up in a field also shows that this is a private meeting and no-one is supposed to know. furthermore, this shows in detail what is exactly happening.

shot 4: long shot [ls]

This long shot shows head to toe visible and shows plenty of background. This shows that the deal has been settled and the 2 friends are both walking off.

shot 5: over the shoulder shot

For this photo we have once again chosen an over the shoulder shot, this normally shows conversations between people and someones point of view. In this case this is representing to the audience that the stalker is close and can see everything, also it gives an impression of suspense.

shot 6: low angle

For this photo, we have chosen a low angle this shows dominance and supremacy the stalker has over the victim. this also shows that the victim does not know that he is being watched.

shot 7: medium shot [ms], unusual perspectives

In this photo, we have chosen a medium shot and unusual perspective, this communicates to the audience that the stalker is in power and is trying to harm the victim.

shot 8: medium close up, wide shot/establishing shot

For this photo, we have chosen a medium close up and a establisng shot. this shot is usually used to establish setting. this communicates to the audience that the stalker has taken full power over the victim. The facial expression of the victim tells the audience that the stalker is causing pain and injury to the victim, there is no way of the victim getting out.

Image result for film posters kids

Language
looking at this poster you can tell as soon as you look at it that it is a film poster. The effect created here is the bold writing, centre picture, a billing block about main stars and producers, the age rating at the bottom, the names of the directors and the company production names at the bottom. The use of a tag -line at the top is a really big key convention when it comes to films. the effect of these key conventions on the audience is that they are able to quickly pick up on the type of genre by the use of the dark blue, orange and green colours which is noticeably the types of colours used in sci-fi action animations and who the target audience is, observing this film poster you tell this is a type of film made for families with young children. The slight glimpse of the characters gives it away that this is a kids film as the way the characters are portrayed. Another way you can tell that this is a film poster is the release date at the bottom and where the film is viewing.

Institution
Monsters vs Aliens release date= March 27 2009 [united.states]. Monsters vs Aliens was produced my Dream Works animation and distributed by paramount pictures. directors are Rob Letterman and Conrad Vernon.
starring= Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogan, Hugh Laurie, will Arnett, Kiefer Sutherland, Rainn Wilson, Paul Rudd and Stephan Colbert.

Audience
Seeing this film poster the main target audience for 'Monsters vs Aliens' it looks very adequate for both genders, however, it may be targeted more towards female viewers as the character is put at the centre and seems to be on a high pedestal. This is showing female dominance. Furthermore, the tag-line towards the top suggest that this film is going to be more about fighting and saving lives of others but with a twist.

Representation
The centre image clearly shows a female hero who is surrounded by these creatures who seem to be her helpers in fighting a battle. The font of writing and the colourful images suggests that this is a friendly sci-fi action animation as expected in sci-fi films, by the way, the letters are placed and the size of them also the images behind the female character of the spaceships is a big give away. Furthermore, this front cover gives a new perspective on women as it highly conman for male characters to be the centre of attention when it comes to being a hero in a film.
